Water Hero is “Smart” Leak Detection + Prevention + Conservation
- Whole-house leak protection
- Monitors and displays water flow down to the second
- Tracks trending freeze temperatures
- Managed with your smartphone
- Includes battery back-up
- Pulse and serial ports for quantified home enthusiasts
- Powerful tools for water conservation
- On Board Leak Detection
Flow data are analyzed and leaks are detected by the electronics in the house. Flow monitoring and protection continue even during a power outage or loss of WiFi connectivity.
- WiFi Connected
Flow data are transmitted to the Water Hero Cloud, where they are stored and can be retrieved or analyzed via smartphone or the web. Data remain under the control of the homeowner. No personally identifiable water usage information will be made.
- Control via Water Hero’s Mobile App or a Web Browser
The unit can be programmed and all services and data are accessible via the Water Hero App (Android or iOS) or via a web browser.
- Smartphone Alerts for Detected Leaks
Alerts can be sent to one or multiple recipients—the end user, a neighbor or family member, or a plumber—in case a leak is detected.
- Onboard Temperature Sensor
Water Hero includes an onboard ambient air temperature sensor to provide Users early warning in case of freezing trends in their basement.
- Backup Battery
Continuity of protection is assured in case of a power outage by the onboard rechargeable lithium ion battery. This battery has enough power to activate the motorized shut-off valve multiple times.
- Power Failure Alert
If a power outage surpasses a User-defined setting (ex:10 minutes) Users will receive an Alert. Water Hero continues to provide protection with its Backup Battery.
- Base Leakage Rate (BLR)
Homeowners who have a known, non-destructive leak, such as a leaky faucet or toilet, can set a Base Leakage Rate. In this way, Water Hero will not trigger an alert or shutoff for this known leak rate.
- Home / Away / Other Modes
Users can set various trigger points based on the different water usage profiles based on whether household members are at home or away from the home.
- Automatic Mode Changes
At the users’ option, Water Hero can automatically place itself into ‘Away’ mode if it records no water usage over a prescribed number of hours.
- Bypass / Override
So that filling a swimming pool, washing a car, or irrigating for an extended period does not trigger an alert or water shutoff, Water Hero provides an ‘Override’ setting. With this, users can suspend Water Hero’s protection algorithms for a selected period of time.
- Open APIs
Water Hero is developing cloud-level application programming interfaces (APIs) to allow for future compatibility with other home automation systems.
- Over the Air Software Updates
New software features and updates are ‘pushed’ automatically from the Water Hero Cloud to your device, keeping your Water Hero up-to-date at all times.
- Data Ports for Quantified Home Enthusiasts
Water Hero includes a pulse output port for hobbyists to connect to compatible third-party home quantifying hubs, allowing them another means for tracking and analyzing water usage data. We also provide a serial output connection that allows access to Water Hero’s full-resolution data stream.
Conserving Water and Saving Money
Not all leaks cause structural damage to your home. But they can hurt your pocketbook:
- Small, relentless leaks from eroded toilet flappers or faulty irrigation lines can cost you hundreds of dollars per year.
- The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the average home leaks 10K gallons per year. 10% of homes leak 30K gallons per year.
- That adds up to 1 trillion gallons wasted each year in the United States!
- Water Hero lets you identify these problems long before your monthly or quarterly water bill arrives.
Water Hero’s flow data and conservation tools empower home owners to use water more efficiently.
- We help users track and modify their water usage, set alerts, and eliminate billing surprises.
- When we detect a leak, we warn you first, then shut off the flow.
- You stay in control, because Water Hero’s features are managed from your smartphone or browser.
Protect yourself with the Water Hero model that’s right for you.

Dan Sterling had a leak. While away for the weekend, faulty plumbing in a 3rd floor bathroom laid waste to everything below, down to the basement.
After cleaning up this $50K+ catastrophe, Dan looked for a solution to avoid a repeat in his 150 year old home. What he found were overpriced and under-performing old school designs. They cost thousands of dollars and provided archaic control panels that were frustrating to program. They lacked Internet connectivity and provided no useful information on water consumption
As an experienced serial entrepreneur, Dan saw the opportunity for a new leak detection system that made use of modern chipsets, advanced software, and the power of the Internet to help people conserve, protect, and save money.
Dan built a team that unveiled a product concept in June 2014 and was awarded winner of the Massachusetts Clean Energy Coalition Hackathon, held at Greentown Labs. In October 2014 the company launched a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised over $60,000 and brought a strong response from various interested parties, including homeowners’ insurance providers.
The system makes use of a homeowner’s existing WiFi network to collect water usage information in the Cloud, down to a per-second level. Simple profile information provided by the user allows Water Hero to start looking for unusual water flows that may indicate a leak. When it detects abnormal water usage, a homeowner receives a warning message via a text message. Unless the homeowner instructs otherwise, Water Hero will activate a motorized valve to shut off the water, protecting your home and your family.
Imagine a pipe bursting in your home while you’re away on vacation. Damages can run into thousands of dollars, and your family’s most valuable possessions destroyed. Mold can set in, you could be out of the house for months, and the value of your home could decline permanently. Insurance only begins to cover the losses from a water leak.
Our premise is that leak and pipe burst protection should be affordable by everyone, and that it should be easy to install and easy to own. We want to help protect you from all leaks, large and small, and allow you to understand and control your water usage better than ever before. Water Hero provides you with an economical system to let you conserve, protect, and save water—one of our most precious resources.
